Detroit’s The Congregation infuses a historic church with locally-sourced eats, house made drinks, and a packed calendar of events.
The Congregation, a cafe, bar, and community hub in Detroit’s Boston Edison and Atkinson neighborhoods, was bustling this past January — a usually slower time for the industry. Since its March 2020 debut, the venue has reimagined the former New St. James AME Church, continuing its legacy as a gathering place for the community.
“It took us four years to open the doors, and despite opening two weeks before a major shutdown, our team and I were determined not to let it fail,” says Betsy Murdoch, co-owner and managing partner.
The Congregation hums with a vibrant mix of energy and charm, creating a space that feels both lively and inviting. The steady whir of espresso machines fills the air as baristas craft seasonal lattes with house-made syrups and carefully prepared pour-overs. By early afternoon, cocktail shakers join the symphony, transitioning the café into an evening destination.
